Rise, Take Action, Repeat – The Mantra for Success

In earlier posts, we have discussed the two pillars in your journey towards success, namely motivation and habit formation. These two pillars are meant to support the major driving force in your life, and that is taking action.

In my opinion, the drive to take action is formed by motivation and habits. When I was suffering from depression, the first step I took was to watch motivational videos continuously. Then I developed a habit of watching motivational videos and researching about self-help courses that can help me overcome the pain of losing my girlfriend.

Combining these two together, I was primarily taking regular action for the betterment of my life. It was a process that I followed, and it has led me to where I am today.

But I understand that not everyone is in my position, and they constantly look for reasons to avoid taking action. Taking action is hands down the single most important tool for achieving success in life.

Road Towards Success

If you want to make money, you have to take a decision on finding multiple sources of your income. If you want to lose weight you have to take action on leading a healthy lifestyle. If you want to meet the love of your life, you have to go out and meet people and also learn ways on how you can attract people you want in your life.

There are tons of ways you can find on the internet that help you or motivate you to take action. But I have come up with a three-part process that makes me take action every single day: –

  1. Drawing the life, I want to Live

One of the cornerstones of my mantra is drawing the life you want to lead. Today a lot of stress is laid on finding your passion. But with kind of multi-dimensional lives that we are living it ‘s hard to pinpoint to a single driving passion. Alternatively, you can draw the kind of life you want to live. This will include your physical health, the house in which you are living or the people you have in your life. Don’t take this literally and if you are not a good drawer it doesn’t really matter. You are essentially forming an image in your mind about your future.

  1. Working towards it

No, once a rough image is formed in your head, you now have to segregate the individual aspects and work towards them. For example, if in your drawing you want yourself to be more successful regarding money, you need to focus on your income sources. Furthermore, if you picture yourself healthier, you also need to take action towards weight loss. When an image is created in our mind, you start working towards it, as you have a direction.

  1. Mixture of Motivation and Habit

To make sure you don’t falter, you have to feed yourself continuously with motivation. You have to keep thinking about your future image until it becomes a part of your reality. The image will always motivate you to achieve that and by taking the action you will be forming a habit, that will then help you through the process.

Now in above three points, I have given a rough idea and in the future posts, I will be discussing more them. But one thing you need to understand is that you need to move constantly towards achieving your targets, and that can only be done by taking regular action.

Motivation gets you Started, Habit Keeps You Going

In the last article, we explained how motivation works and how it proves to be fuel in your journey towards the desired ‘motive.’ In this article, we discuss the necessity of ‘habit formation’ in your life.

It has been rightly said that without forming habits, you won’t be amounting to much in life. Consider my case; my life was knocked down due to depression and motivation seemed the only option that would take me out of it. But initially I watched random videos, and they had a very temporary effect. So I decided to watch videos continuously for one month.

Focus on your Goals

This was the first habit I formed. After about 15 days, I felt positive when I woke up and looked forward towards the day. Even now, the first thing I do in the morning is read or watch something positive. My mind has formed a habit of starting the day on a positive note, come what may.

Humans are habitual creatures and our mind continuously develops habits. Most of the times we don’t realize it, but connections are formed in our brain that leads to happiness. For example, if you are overweight, chances are you have a habit of feasting on junk food or late night snacking. When you feast on junk or fattening food, you mind associates that with happiness, even if you know that the food you are eating essentially harms your body. Your mind formed a connection between junk food and happiness, and this resulted in a habit of eating junk food.

If you are on this website, the chances are that habits you have, do more harm than good. Don’t take this in a negative way. The system today, in my opinion, forces us to fall prey to such habits. But this can be changed by careful evaluation.

Theoretically habits of a person can be modified through positive and negative reinforcement. Studies have shown that negative reinforcement has a much faster impact, but it makes you vulnerable to other issues. Positive reinforcement takes its time, but if done correctly it has a lasting effect.

This concept was explained to me by my Astrologer. I know this sounds absurd, but while I was moving out of depression, I consulted an astrologer and the corrective action he took helped me a lot. He was a firm believer that astrology can only alter the energies around you, and if you don’t make an effort on your own, nothing major is going to change. He also follows a relatively new method of astrology, which seems perfect for the 21st century. You can check all about it on Lal Kitab Remedies.

So, now let’s move into the habits and how you can form them. For that let’s move to the concept of motive. For the sake of the argument, let’s say you are planning to lose weight. So you have watched tons of videos that have motivated you but are still not doing anything. So how do you change that? Well, let’s say you form a habit of going for a run before you have your breakfast. And you do so every day, right after you watch your video. Early morning runs, can have an incredible impact on the body metabolism. This habit will help you in two ways. First, the run will help you burn fat and second; the realization that you worked on your problem early in the day will have a positive impact throughout your day.

Similarly, you can form habits in other areas of your life too.

And yes, when you are working on positive reinforcement, I would also suggest you to work on your harmful habits like smoking. The greater self-awareness you have towards your negative habits, greater are your chances to overcome them.

So I guess, motivation and habits go hand in hand and are crucial towards your path to success.

To your success,
Ravi

Why you need motivation in your life

This is my first post on this blog, and if you are interested in reading why I started this website and brief history into my past, you can check out My Story page.

To recap, I was neck deep in depression, and sometimes I spent hours just staring at the walls, too tired to do anything at all.

What was the reason for this? Well, there we two things, I got into engineering and I hated every second of it. But the primary reason was that my girlfriend in college (who meant the world to me), dumped me right after our graduation.

Now when I think of it, they were possibly the two most absurd causes for my depression. But at that time, it was equivalent to falling from the 10th floor. At that time, I only had two options.

Depression

First, was the easier choice. I could have continued to stay in my pit and eventually wait for the day I die. The second choice was to realize what I was feeling and do something about it. It is obvious that I went with the second option, but it took an incredible amount of effort to change.

One of the core things that helped me overcome this self-imposed depression pit was motivation. One day I decided to watch a TED talk video, and that completely changed my perspective. It was also the day that I decided that I would watch a motivational video every day for the next 30 days. For 30 days this was the first thing after waking up, and it that one month had an enormous impact on my mind.

You see motivation is essential for all human beings. We constantly need to be motivated if we want to achieve something, if we went to accomplish our goals or if we simply want to lead a happy life. I won’t go in-depth behind the physiological implications that motivation has in our life, but here are few significant benefits of motivation: –

  • It paints a positive picture in our mind.
  • It helps us to stay in constant touch with our ‘motive’.
  • It leads to secretion of feel-good hormones like ‘dopamine’.
  • It takes your mind away from the negativity

Let’s talk about the aforementioned points in detail –

  1. Motivation helps us create a picture of the life we want to live. This picture is incredibly powerful and brings enormous amounts of positivity in your life. But you have to be careful though as sometimes it can also lead to vague thoughts. So it is better to focus on a particular type.
  2. Specific type essentially means the motive or the goal that you are focused on. For me at the time, the only motive was to get out of depression. Similarly, for you, the motive could be to make more money or lose weight. So I highly recommend you to stick to your motive.
  3. Now when the picture of your desired state keeps on playing in your head, your body secretes hormones that have a positive effect on your state of mind and encourages you to take action.
  4. Finally, motivation plays a major role in keeping the negativity at bay. When I was in the depression, I was constantly drawn to the negative side of things. This hampers growth and takes you towards inaction.

Now that you have developed a brief understanding of how motivation works it is highly recommended to constantly find motivational videos. Granted there are tons of things that can motivate you, but videos are the easiest resources that you can find. So here is how you should do it, commit to yourself that you are going to watch a video every day for the next thirty days. Find videos related to your motive and watch them after you wake up and before you sleep.

No matter what you want to achieve in life, motivation will prove to be the fuel for your journey.

To your Successes,
Ravi
